Faro travel guide - where to stay, what to do, and where to eat in Faro, Algarve, Portugal.
Faro's cooking is Algarve seafood cooking on the edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon: clams, cockles, octopus, cuttlefish, sea bream and sardines, served grilled, in a copper cataplana pot or in rice dishes. Inland and old-town tascas add salt cod, pork, almond and fig sweets and medronho spirit, while a growing set of modern kitchens (Alameda, Pigs and Cows) offer tasting and set menus. Most tasca meals cost €10-22 (~$11.50-25) per person; a tasting menu runs €90-115 (~$103.50-132).

Dining etiquette & tips
Navigate the local food scene confidently.
Reserve Alameda, Pigs and Cows and Vila Adentro ahead; Alameda is closed Tuesday and Wednesday and Pigs and Cows serves Thursday to Sunday only
Tasca do Ricky does not take reservations from May to September; arrive when it opens at 19:00
Lunch is served about 12:00-15:00 and many kitchens reopen at 19:00; between those hours only cafes serve food
A couvert (bread, olives, cheese or spreads) arrives unasked and is charged only if eaten; send back anything not wanted
Cataplana and rice dishes are priced for two; confirm the price before ordering
Cash helps in tascas; Adega Nova is reported as cash-only
Tipping is optional: rounding up or leaving 5-10% is typical in sit-down restaurants
Ria Formosa seafood is best in autumn and winter for clams; sardines are a summer dish
- Vegetarian vegan
- Outro Lado (Travessa da Madalena 6) is a dedicated vegan restaurant; most tascas offer only salad, omelette or vegetable rice, so ask for 'sem carne e sem peixe'.
- Gluten free
- Grilled fish and meat with potatoes and salad are naturally gluten-free; bread, couvert and batter-fried dishes are not. Say 'sem glúten' when ordering.
- Allergies
- Shellfish, nuts (almond and fig sweets) and eggs are common in local dishes; state the allergy in Portuguese ('tenho alergia a...') when booking.
- Halal kosher
- No dedicated halal or kosher restaurant was verified in Faro; visitors with these requirements should phone ahead, for example Namastey (Indian) on +351 289 042 500, to ask about meat sourcing.
