Mértola Castle and Guadiana River Panorama

The Moorish-era Castelo de Mértola crowns the whitewashed hilltop town of Mértola, looking down over a broad bend of the Guadiana river where terraced houses cascade toward the water and the old bridge crosses below. Late afternoon light rakes across the town from the west, warming the whitewashed facades and castle stonework while the river below picks up gold and amber reflections, and the same viewpoint at blue hour, once the town's lights begin to switch on, gives a second contrasting look with warm windows against a darkening river.
