Monsaraz Lakeside Trail (Trilho do Alqueva)

The Monsaraz Lakeside Trail, known locally as the Trilho do Alqueva, follows the shoreline of the Alqueva reservoir beneath the whitewashed hilltop village of Monsaraz in Reguengos de Monsaraz municipality. The trailhead is just below the village walls, reached by car since there is no regular public transport directly to the start point; parking is available near the village entrance. The loop covers 8 kilometres and takes two and a half to three hours, following gentle terrain along the reservoir edge with under 150 metres of cumulative elevation gain and no technical difficulty. The path passes through olive groves and vineyards characteristic of the Alqueva wine region, running close to the water's edge for much of its length with the medieval castle walls of Monsaraz visible on the hilltop above. The route is fully exposed to the sun with little tree cover, so shade is minimal throughout. Wading birds and other waterfowl frequent the shallows along the shoreline, making this a popular stage for casual birdwatching alongside the walking itself. There are no refuge huts or water sources along the trail, and the nearest facilities are back in Monsaraz village at the start and end of the loop. Because the terrain is flat and the loop returns to its starting point, this trail suits visitors looking for an easier half-day walk paired with a visit to the historic village above.
