Fishermen's Trail: Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe

The Zambujeira do Mar to Odeceixe stage is the final Alentejo leg of the Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail, running along the boundary between Odemira municipality and the Algarve within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. The trailhead is at Praia da Zambujeira, reached by bus or taxi from Odemira, with parking near the village. The stage covers 19.5 kilometres one-way and takes six to seven hours, following clifftop paths past the Cascalheira and Carvalhal viewpoints before a long final descent through dunes to the Seixe river mouth at Odeceixe. Elevation change is moderate and gradual for most of the route, with the steepest section being the descent into the Odeceixe river valley near the end. The surface is a mix of compacted clifftop path, loose sand near viewpoints and a soft dune crossing in the final kilometre, with little shade throughout. Notable landmarks include the Cascalheira viewpoint, with sweeping views back along the coast toward Zambujeira do Mar, and the Carvalhal cliffs, before the trail opens onto the wide golden beach at the Seixe river mouth. Trekking poles are useful on the sandy final descent. There are no refuge huts along the route, and water sources are absent aside from the trailhead and endpoint; hikers should carry sufficient supplies for the full distance. The Ribeira de Seixe marks the traditional boundary between the Alentejo and the Algarve, so hikers effectively cross from one Portuguese region into another over the course of this stage. Odeceixe, at the end, has cafés, accommodation and a Rede Expressos bus connection back toward Lisbon or south into the Algarve.
