Climate Overview

Poland has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons. Winters (December-February) are cold with regular snowfall, particularly in the mountains. Summers (June-August) are warm to hot with temperatures regularly reaching 25-30°C in lowlands and cities. Spring and autumn are mild and often the most pleasant times to visit, with colorful foliage in October being spectacular. Rainfall is distributed throughout the year with peak rainfall in June-July.

Pleasant warming temperatures, Easter celebrations, lower prices than summer. Some rain. Mountains still snowy at high elevation.

One of the best months — warm, green, lower crowds. May holidays (Constitution Day May 3rd) are festive. Tatra Mountains open for hiking.

Summer arrives. Krakow Film Festival, Wianki Midsummer on Vistula. Long days, excellent conditions but tourist numbers rising fast.

Jul

21°C/70°F
Peak tourist season. Hot in cities (30°C possible). Baltic coast very popular. Open'er music festival Gdynia. Mountain thunderstorms common afternoon.

Aug

Hottest month. Pierogi Festival and Gdansk Shakespeare Festival. Very crowded at major attractions. Baltic sea at warmest (20°C).

Sep

16°C/61°F
Arguably the best month — warm, sunny, far fewer crowds than August. Jewish Culture Festival Krakow (late Sept). Hiking conditions excellent.

Oct

Spectacular autumn foliage across all Poland. Unsound Festival Krakow. Cooler but often clear and sunny. Bieszczady Mountains at their most colorful.

Nov

5°C/41°F
Cold and grey. All Saints Day (Nov 1) illuminated cemeteries are deeply atmospheric. Fewer tourists. Christmas market preparations begin.

Dec

1°C/34°F
Christmas markets in Krakow, Warsaw, Wroclaw from late November — genuinely magical. Cold but festive. Ski season begins in Zakopane.

🌸 Spring

Mar-May

Temperatures rise from 5°C to 18°C. Cherry blossoms in Warsaw and Krakow parks by April. Mountain trails open progressively — high Tatras accessible from May. Fewer crowds and lower prices.

Tips: Pack layers for variable temperatures. April can bring rain showers. May is ideal for city sightseeing before summer crowds.

Jun-Aug

Warmest season with 22-28°C in cities. Baltic coast at its best for swimming and beach holidays. Mountain hiking season in full swing. High tourist season — Krakow and Auschwitz very busy.

Tips: Book accommodation 2-3 months ahead for Krakow and coastal towns. Start mountain hikes early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Stay hydrated in cities.

Sep-Nov

September still warm (18-22°C) and often sunny — arguably the best month overall. October brings spectacular foliage across forests and parks. November turns cold and grey.

Tips: September and October are the sweet spot — great weather, fewer crowds than summer, excellent hiking conditions. Pack a warm jacket for evenings from September.

Dec-Feb

Cold across Poland with temperatures from -5°C to 3°C. Christmas markets in Krakow, Warsaw, and Wroclaw are magical from late November. Zakopane transforms into a ski resort. Bialowieza Forest has a fairytale snow-covered quality.

Tips: Layer up heavily for outdoor sightseeing. Book Zakopane ski accommodation months ahead for January-February weekends. Christmas market visits are rewarding but dress warmly.
