Masovian (Mazowsze) is the central voivodeship of Poland, built around Warsaw, the capital, whose Old Town was rebuilt after 1944 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond the city lie Chopin's birthplace at Żelazowa Wola, the riverside cathedral city of Płock, the brick castle town of Pułtusk and the forests and dunes of Kampinos National Park.
Masovia has a temperate continental climate with warm summers, cold winters and short transitional seasons. Warsaw sits on a flat plain along the Vistula and has no mountains to buffer weather: winters bring snow and frost, summers can have heat waves above 30°C and sudden thunderstorms. The Kampinos Forest and Mazovian countryside are slightly cooler at night than the city center.
Best time to visit
Best: May, June, September
Best Reason: May-June brings 15-24°C days, long daylight, blooming parks and the start of free Chopin concerts in Łazienki. September offers warm, stable weather, golden light and thinner crowds.
Peak Season: July, August, and December (Christmas markets and New Year)
Avoid: January, February and November
Avoid Reason: January and February are cold, often between -6°C and 1°C, with short days and grey skies; November is damp, dark and chilly. The Old Town Christmas market lifts December well above these months.
