Masovian (Mazowsze) is the central voivodeship of Poland, built around Warsaw, the capital, whose Old Town was rebuilt after 1944 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond the city lie Chopin's birthplace at Żelazowa Wola, the riverside cathedral city of Płock, the brick castle town of Pułtusk and the forests and dunes of Kampinos National Park.

Bargaining tips
Negotiate like a local.
Prices in shops and malls are fixed; bargaining is accepted only at flea markets such as Bazar Różyckiego and Kolejowa.
At bazaars, offer about 70-80% of the first quote and be ready to walk away politely.
Check amber with a UV torch and ask for an authenticity certificate; real amber floats in salt water and is warm to the touch.
Most shops accept contactless cards and Blik; small market stalls prefer cash (PLN).
Customs & restrictions
What you can and can't take home.
Restrictions: Antiques over 50 years old require an export permit from the Provincial Conservator of Monuments. Bring-home limits: non-EU travellers may export 1 litre of spirits and 200 cigarettes duty-free into their home country (check your national rules).
Tax Refund: Non-EU visitors can claim VAT refund (Tax Free) on purchases of 200 PLN ($53) or more in one shop, using Global Blue or Planet; get the form stamped by customs at Chopin Airport before check-in.
Sunday Trading: Most shops are closed on Sundays under the trading restriction; Żabka convenience stores, petrol stations and malls' restaurants operate, and a few trading Sundays occur each year (last Sunday of January, April, June, August; Sunday before Easter; December Sundays before Christmas).
Payment: Cards and Blik are accepted almost everywhere; carry 100-200 PLN ($26-53) cash for markets and rural areas.
