Masovian (Mazowsze) is the central voivodeship of Poland, built around Warsaw, the capital, whose Old Town was rebuilt after 1944 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Beyond the city lie Chopin's birthplace at Żelazowa Wola, the riverside cathedral city of Płock, the brick castle town of Pułtusk and the forests and dunes of Kampinos National Park.
Top trails
Routes worth lacing up your boots for.
-
1
Palmiry Memorial and Forest Trail
Flat sandy forest paths in the eastern Kampinos Forest start at the Palmiry Cemetery-Museum, where more than 2,000 people were executed by German occupiers in 1939-1941. Pine and oak woodland, wet alder carr and heath open up beyond the cemetery; the walk suits first-time visitors who want forest without elevation.
-
2
Kampinos Dunes and Swamps Trail (Granica to Dąbrowa Leśna)
The signature Kampinos landscape: parallel inland dune ridges up to about 30 m high, separated by peaty swales and alder swamp, linked by waymarked trails. Sand makes walking slow, so allow more time than the distance suggests. The park lists hundreds of kilometres of marked footpaths, entered free of charge on most routes.

3
Żelazowa Wola to Sochaczew Riverside Walk
A flat walk through meadows and willow-lined Utrata and Bzura floodplain from composer Frédéric Chopin's birthplace manor park toward Sochaczew. Pairs a gentle hike with the park concerts held in summer at the museum.

4
Las Kabacki Forest Loop
Warsaw's largest city forest begins at the southern Metro terminus. Pine and mixed woodland with sand and gravel paths, a small nature reserve section and equestrian trails make it the quickest real forest walk from the centre.
-
5
Las Bielański Nature Reserve Trail
An ancient oak-hornbeam remnant of the Vistula escarpment forest inside Warsaw, protected as a nature reserve with old trees and birdlife. Short and easy, well suited to a half-day alongside the Camaldolese monastery.
-
6
Zalew Zegrzyński Shoreline Path
Lake and river-mouth paths following the reservoir that formed where the Narew meets the Bug. Mixed surface of paved promenade and sandy forest paths with frequent kiosks in season.
-
7
Puszcza Kozienicka Forest Walk (Kozienice Landscape Park)
One of Poland's largest lowland forests, with fir and pine stands, oak, and wetland edges near the Vistula, plus the Kozienice Landscape Park. Waymarked loops are less visited than Kampinos.

Forest and wet meadow trails around the Rawka river and Bolimów Forest, a district known for its meandering river corridor and First World War battlefield sites of 1915.

When to hike
Seasonal conditions in Masovian.
- Spring
- April-May: fresh green forest, bird migration, high water in swamp sections; ticks become active from March.
- Summer
- June-August: warm (22-30 C), mosquitoes and ticks in Kampinos; swim after walks on the Zegrze Reservoir.
- Fall
- September-October: golden oak and birch, mushroom picking in Puszcza Kozienicka and Kampinos, cooler comfortable temperatures.
- Winter
- December-February: snow and frost make flat forest routes good for cross-country skiing in Kampinos when snow cover lasts; daylight is short.
