The largest park in central Warsaw (76 ha), laid out for King Stanisław August Poniatowski. Highlights are the neoclassical Palace on the Isle, the Chopin Monument, the Old Orangery, the Amphitheatre and free-roaming peacocks. Free Sunday Chopin recitals run at the monument from May to September.
Łazienki Royal Park, entered from Agrykola 1 in Warsaw's Śródmieście district, is the largest park in central Warsaw at about 76 hectares. It was laid out for King Stanisław August Poniatowski in the 18th century as a royal summer retreat, and it remains one of the most popular green spaces in Poland's Masovian region. The centrepiece is the neoclassical Palace on the Isle, which appears to float on an artificial lake and is reached by colonnaded bridges. Inside, paid tours show the king's apartments, the Ballroom, the Picture Gallery and the Solomon Room. Elsewhere in the park visitors find the Chopin Monument, the Old Orangery with its theatre, the Amphitheatre built in the style of a Roman ruin, the White Pavilion and the Myślewicki Palace. Peacocks and pheasants wander freely, and squirrels are common along the paths. A typical visit lasts two to four hours, depending on whether the palace interior is included. The park itself is free and opens at 6AM, closing at dusk. From mid-May to the end of September, free piano recitals of Chopin's music are held at the monument on Sundays at noon and 4PM, drawing large crowds who sit on the lawns. Those Sunday recitals are the busiest time, while weekday mornings are the calmest. The best photo angle for the palace is from the bridge approach or the lakeside path, where the reflection doubles the facade. Autumn brings strong colour to the trees, while winter hours at the palace are shorter. Visitors can combine the park with the nearby Belweder and Ujazdów Park, or walk north along the Royal Route toward the Old Town. Feeding the wildlife is discouraged, and cyclists share some of the wider paths with pedestrians.
