Pachacamac is a vast pre-Inca and Inca sanctuary on the Antigua Panamericana Sur at Km 31.5 in Lurin, about 31 km south of central Lima, Peru. The site was a major pilgrimage center dedicated to the creator god Pachacamac, and it contains pyramids, temples, plazas and the Inca Temple of the Sun, built on a hill above the Pacific. The Temple of the Sun is the main photographic subject, with its stepped platforms and a wide view over the ruins to the ocean and the Lurin valley. Other frames include the painted Temple of the Moon area known as the Acllahuasi, the ramps and terraces of the older Painted Temple, and the long desert approaches between structures. Light is best in the late afternoon, when low sun warms the adobe and creates texture on the walls, and earlier morning light gives cooler tones and fewer visitors. December to April offers clear skies and the strongest colors, while winter often brings haze and cloud that dulls the horizon. Midday sun is harsh and shadowless, and there is little shade on the site. Entry is ticketed, with a small on-site museum, and visitors walk or drive between sites on dirt roads; the full circuit covers several kilometers, so a hat, water and sun protection are essential. Crowds are moderate, mostly tour groups, and the extensive layout means good positions are easy to find. Tripods are usually allowed, but drone flights are not permitted at this protected archaeological site. Visitors must stay on marked paths and avoid climbing on ruins. Restrooms and refreshments are available at the entrance and museum area.
