Top 10 Day Trips

The best excursions from Lima.

1

Paracas National Reserve & Ballestas Islands

A full day trip combining two extraordinary natural sites. The Ballestas Islands (nicknamed the 'Poor Man's Galapagos') are home to massive colonies of Humboldt penguins, sea lions, Inca terns, and thousands of seabirds. A boat tour around the islands is one of Peru's wildlife highlights. The Paracas National Reserve features surreal desert landscapes, flamingo lagoons, and stunning Pacific coast scenery. The mysterious Paracas candelabra geoglyph (like a mini-Nazca line) is visible from the water.

Highlights: Ballestas Islands boat tour (1.5 hours): penguins, sea lions, terns, Paracas candelabra geoglyph visible from the sea, Paracas National Reserve desert and coastal scenery, Paracas Bay flamingo spotting, Fresh seafood lunch in Paracas town
2

Ica and Huacachina Sand Dunes

An extraordinary landscape of massive sand dunes surrounding a natural desert oasis lake (Huacachina). The oasis village of Huacachina, with its palm-fringed lake set in a bowl of towering 100m+ sand dunes, is one of Peru's most iconic images. Activities include dune buggy rides across the dunes and sandboarding. Nearby Ica is Peru's pisco capital, with distillery tours available.

Highlights: Huacachina oasis - natural lake in the middle of giant sand dunes, Dune buggy tours across the dunes at high speed, Sandboarding down 100m sand dunes, Pisco distillery tours in Ica, Ica Regional Museum (excellent Nazca and Paracas artifacts)
3

Caral - Oldest City in the Americas

One of the world's most significant archaeological discoveries, Caral is the oldest known city in the Americas (3000-1800 BCE), predating the pyramids of Giza. The UNESCO World Heritage site contains six large platform mounds (pyramids), circular plazas, and residential areas. Remarkably, the city had no evidence of warfare - no weapons or fortifications were found. An extraordinary and humbling experience.

Highlights: Oldest city in the Americas (5,000 years old), Six massive adobe platform mounds (pyramids), UNESCO World Heritage Site, Outstanding Supe Valley scenery, Small but excellent on-site museum
4

Lunahuaná - Rafting and Pisco Country

A charming Andean river valley town 165km south of Lima, famous for white-water rafting on the turquoise Cañete River and for producing excellent pisco and local wines. Lunahuaná offers a completely different landscape from coastal Lima: the deep Andean valley, green riverside cultivation, and the dramatic Inca ruins of Incahuasi above the town make it a rewarding day trip.

Highlights: White-water rafting on the Cañete River (Class II-IV depending on season), Inca ruins of Incahuasi above town, Pisco and local wine bodega tastings, Canoeing and kayaking, Peruvian valley cuisine (excellent chicharrón)
5

Callao & Palomino Islands Seal Colony

Lima's closest wildlife experience, the Palomino Islands off Callao harbor a large colony of South American sea lions and Humboldt penguins. Boat tours from Callao's fishing pier take visitors to the islands where it's possible (in calm conditions) to swim alongside the sea lions. The 18th-century Real Felipe Fortress in Callao is also worth visiting.

Highlights: Swimming with sea lions (weather permitting), Humboldt penguin sightings, Callao port and coastal views, Real Felipe Fortress (1747), La Punta seaside promenade
6

Pachacamac Archaeological Complex

The largest and most important archaeological site accessible from Lima as a half or full day trip. Pachacamac was a major Andean oracle and pilgrimage center for over 1,000 years before the Spanish conquest. The 465-hectare complex contains dozens of temples, administrative buildings, and cemeteries representing multiple cultures. The excellent on-site museum displays the famous wooden Pachacamac idol.

Highlights: Temple of the Sun (Inca), Temple of Pachacamac (pre-Inca), Famous wooden Pachacamac idol in the museum, Panoramic Pacific Ocean and Lurín Valley views, Multiple cultures spanning 1,000 years at one site
7

Punta Hermosa & Surf Beaches

Peru's premier surf town 40km south of Lima, offering cleaner water than Lima's urban beaches, excellent surf breaks for all levels, good seafood restaurants, and a laid-back surf culture. Pico Alto, one of the biggest waves in South America, is offshore. Good option for a beach day with cleaner water and a different atmosphere from Lima's urban beaches.

Highlights: World-class surfing at Pico Alto, Beginner surf lessons available, Cleaner Pacific water than Lima beaches, Fresh seafood restaurants, Surfing town atmosphere
