Belmond Sanctuary Lodge

Belmond Sanctuary Lodge is the only hotel located directly at the entrance gate to Machu Picchu, perched on the mountainside above Aguas Calientes with no need for the morning bus queue that other guests face. The lodge is a low-rise, modern building designed to sit unobtrusively against the cloud forest, with gardens of native orchids surrounding the property. Its 31 rooms and suites are simply but comfortably furnished, with several offering direct views toward the ruins or the surrounding peaks. Dining is built around a gourmet restaurant serving Peruvian and international cuisine, complemented by a bar and a daily afternoon tea service. There is no pool, spa, or fitness center, as the property's defining amenity is exclusive access: guests can enter the citadel before the general public arrives for sunrise and remain after day-trippers depart for sunset. Service is attentive and oriented toward trekkers and Inca Trail finishers, with staff well versed in altitude, weather, and entry-ticket logistics for Machu Picchu. Rooms are simply decorated in a style that complements rather than competes with the surrounding cloud forest scenery, and several open directly onto the gardens.
