Harappa Archaeological Site and Museum

Harappa, one of the great cities of the Indus Valley Civilization, lies about 200 km from Lahore in Sahiwal District, reachable in roughly 4 hours by private car via the Multan Road/motorway network, or by taking a Karachi-Peshawar line train to Harappa Road Railway Station and continuing 7 km by local taxi or rickshaw. The site preserves excavated mound ruins, brick granaries, and a cemetery dating back more than 4,500 years, alongside the on-site Harappa Museum, which displays pottery, seals, figurines, and tools recovered from the excavations. A day trip works best with an early morning departure from Lahore, arriving by mid-morning to explore the museum first, when it is less crowded, before walking the excavated mounds during the cooler part of the day; the open ruins offer little shade, so a late-morning to early-afternoon visit avoids the harshest sun. Simple tea stalls and small eateries operate near the site entrance and in the nearby town of Harappa, though visitors intending a substantial meal should plan to eat in Sahiwal or upon return to Lahore. The November-February period brings markedly cooler daytime temperatures, making the extended walk across the open archaeological mounds far more manageable than during the hot Punjab summer, when midday temperatures regularly exceed 40C.
