Wazir Khan Mosque

Wazir Khan Mosque sits deep in the Walled City of Lahore, a short walk from Delhi Gate, and is considered one of the finest examples of Mughal-era tile work in South Asia. Built in the 1630s under Shah Jahan's physician-turned-governor Hakim Ilm-ud-din Wazir Khan, the mosque is famous for its extensive Kashi-kari faience tile mosaics, which cover the entrance facade, four minarets, and the domed prayer hall in floral and calligraphic patterns rendered in blue, turquoise, yellow, and ochre. Visitors enter through a recessed portal into a large open courtyard ringed by shopfronts (a rare feature for a mosque of this scale), then move through to the main prayer hall, whose ceiling is covered in frescoed panels and Quranic calligraphy. A typical visit lasts 30-45 minutes: enough time to circle the courtyard, examine the tile panels close up near the entrance iwan, and step into the prayer hall when it is open to non-worshippers. The best light for photographing the tilework falls in mid-morning, when the sun angles directly onto the eastern facade; late afternoon light on the minarets is also worth catching. The mosque is busiest around Friday prayers and during Ramadan evenings, and quietest on weekday mornings outside prayer times. The surrounding lanes of the Walled City, including the nearby Shahi Hammam and Delhi Gate bazaar, make it easy to combine the mosque with a longer walking route through Old Lahore.
