Muscat is the capital of Oman, a low-rise coastal city of white buildings set between the Gulf of Oman and the rugged Hajar Mountains. Its old harbour district of Mutrah, the vast Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Royal Opera House and a string of quiet beaches make it one of the Gulf's most relaxed and culturally rooted capitals.
Muscat's nightlife is quiet by Gulf standards and almost entirely built around licensed hotel venues, shisha cafes and waterfront promenades. Alcohol is legal only in licensed hotel bars, clubs and restaurants (legal age 21); drinking or being drunk in public is an offence, and during Ramadan nightlife is largely suspended. Evenings otherwise mean a stroll along the Mutrah Corniche, coffee and shisha, dinner late, and music or opera at the Royal Opera House.
