Wadi Shab is a narrow canyon near Tiwi in Ash Sharqiyah South Governorate, about 140-150 km from Muscat, reached in roughly 1h45 by car on Route 17. There is no public bus, so visitors use a hire car, a private driver at about OMR 50-80 per day, or an organised tour at around OMR 45-60 per person. The trip starts at the car park beside the highway, where a short boat crossing of the wadi pool, which has traditionally cost around OMR 1 per person, leads to the trail. From there a walk of about 45 minutes to an hour follows a rocky path past date plantations and small irrigation channels, then enters the canyon, where a series of clear green pools can be crossed by swimming. At the far end a narrow gap in the rock leads to a hidden cave with a waterfall, which most visitors reach by swimming through a tight opening. The total trip takes about three to four hours return, including swimming, so the hike is moderate rather than easy, and the rocks can be slippery. A sensible one-day arc is to leave Muscat by 6:30 or 7 am, reach Wadi Shab by about 9 am before the heat and the busiest crowds, hike and swim, and then have lunch at a roadside restaurant in Tiwi or at the small cafes by the car park. In the afternoon, many visitors stop at Bimmah Sinkhole, 30 minutes back toward Muscat, before returning. Swimmers should wear water shoes, bring a waterproof bag for valuables, and avoid the wadi after heavy rain, when flash floods can occur. October to April is the best season, with warm water and moderate air temperatures, and in summer the heat on the trail is considerable. Modest swimwear with a cover-up in the villages is respectful, and drones and loud music are discouraged. Early starts also provide softer light inside the canyon.
