Alila Jabal Akhdar occupies a cliff-edge position in the Al Hajar Mountains at approximately 2,000 metres elevation, overlooking the dramatic Wadi Ghul canyon — sometimes described as the Grand Canyon of Arabia — in the Ad Dakhiliyah Governorate. The resort lies roughly 160 km south-west of Muscat International Airport, a two-hour drive via the Nizwa highway and the mountain road that climbs steeply through checkpoints requiring 4WD or high-clearance vehicles. The high altitude produces noticeably cooler temperatures than the coast year-round, with snow occasionally recorded in January and February.
The resort was designed with local stone, rammed earth walls, and ochre-and-sand tones to integrate with the canyon landscape. Canyon Pool Villas and Mountain Pool Villas range from 90 to 160 square metres, each with a private plunge pool positioned to face either the wadi or the mountain plateau. The cliff-edge infinity pool, suspended visually above the 1,000-metre canyon floor, is one of the most photographed features in Oman.
Dining centres on the Juniper restaurant, which serves contemporary international menus drawing on ingredients grown in the resort's organic herb and vegetable garden, including rose-infused preparations that reference Jabal Akhdar's historical role as the centre of Oman's rose cultivation industry. - The rose harvest season runs from late February through early April; visiting then allows participation in the traditional rose distillation process in nearby villages.
- Pack warm layers regardless of the travel month — evening temperatures at 2,000 metres can drop to 10°C or below from November through March.
- The guided hike to Wadi Bani Habib takes approximately 90 minutes each way; book through the concierge the day before as group sizes are limited.
