Amerikalinjen occupies the former 1919 headquarters of the Norwegian America Line, the shipping company that carried thousands of Norwegian emigrants to New York, standing directly across from Oslo Central Station on Jernbanetorget. The Art Nouveau building was restored to preserve its ornate stonework, wrought iron, and original stairwell while converting the interior into a boutique hotel that leans into its maritime emigration history through room styling and public-area design. Rooms are compact by international luxury standards but richly detailed, mixing brass fixtures, marble bathrooms, and vintage-inspired furnishings, with several suites offering higher ceilings and separate seating areas. Dining centres on Amerika, a restaurant serving American-Norwegian comfort food with a contemporary twist, and Vestibalen, a grand vaulted hall used for brunch and events; the hotel's Vega bar has become one of Oslo's most talked-about cocktail destinations, known for its inventive drinks menu and late hours.
