Hotel Ullensvang

Hotel Ullensvang stands on the southern shore of Hardangerfjord in the village of Lofthus, approximately 175 kilometres east of Bergen by road — roughly 2.5 hours by car, or reachable by a combination of bus and ferry. The surrounding Hardanger region is Norway's principal apple and cherry-growing district, and the hotel's own orchard slopes down toward the fjord; blossom season in late April and early May draws visitors specifically for this landscape.

The hotel has operated on this site since 1846, growing through multiple expansions under successive generations of the same family ownership. The architecture blends traditional Norwegian lodge style and later 20th-century additions, unified by panoramic windows oriented to maximise the fjord and Folgefonna glacier views that define the property's identity. Public areas feature historical photographs documenting the hotel's long guest register, which has included composer Edvard Grieg among notable visitors.

Rooms range from standard doubles to family rooms and suites, all oriented toward the fjord to varying degrees. The facilities are among the most comprehensive of any Norwegian fjord hotel: an indoor pool, outdoor pool, spa complex with multiple sauna cabins, a hot tub, and massage treatment rooms. A well-equipped fitness centre is available to all guests.

The restaurant serves a traditional Norwegian dinner menu with a modern approach, using local produce from the Hardanger region including cider made from the hotel's own apples. Breakfast is a full Norwegian buffet. The hotel arranges or advises on fjord kayaking, glacier walks on Folgefonna, and hikes into the mountains above the orchard.
