Det Hanseatiske Hotel

Det Hanseatiske Hotel occupies a cluster of timber buildings on Finnegårdsgaten, a narrow alley running directly behind Bergen's UNESCO-listed Bryggen wharf. The structures are part of the original Hanseatic merchant compound that made Bergen one of northern Europe's most prosperous medieval trading ports. The hotel's 43 rooms are spread across several interconnected timber buildings, each individually designed with hand-carved wooden furnishings, heavy linen drapes, antique mirrors, and wrought-iron fittings. Exposed roof beams and original pine-plank walls feature throughout; the overall effect is of sleeping inside a well-preserved Norwegian folk environment without sacrificing modern comfort. En-suite bathrooms are fitted with contemporary fixtures. A buffet breakfast, included in most room rates, is served in the main salon and covers Norwegian cheeses, smoked salmon, cured meats, soft-boiled eggs, and freshly baked bread. The hotel's location places guests within a five-minute walk of the Fløibanen funicular (which ascends to the Fløyen viewpoint over the city), Bergen Fish Market, the KODE art museums, and the main Bryggen heritage facades. The narrow alleyways of Bryggen immediately behind the hotel become the hotel's atmospheric back garden, and the evening light on the coloured timber warehouses makes this one of the most distinctive urban locations in western Norway. Bergen's city centre is compact and walkable; the light rail (Bybanen) connects to the airport from a stop 10 minutes away on foot.
