Housed in Oslo's former Norwegian America Line headquarters, this Art Deco masterpiece combines 1920s glamour with modern luxury. The hotel features a rooftop bar, speakeasy-style cocktail lounge, and meticulously restored original details.
Amerikalinjen occupies the former headquarters of the Norwegian America Line, the transatlantic shipping company that operated passenger services between Oslo (then Kristiania) and New York from 1913 until the 1960s. The building at Jernbanetorget 2 — directly opposite Oslo Central Station — was completed in 1919 in a confident Art Deco style, with a carved stone facade, tall windows, and a grand entrance hall evoking the golden age of ocean liner travel. The property opened as a hotel in 2019, exactly a century after the building's completion.
The location is among Oslo's most connected: the Opera House and Bjørvika waterfront are a 10-minute walk east; Karl Johans gate, the main pedestrian boulevard leading to the Royal Palace, begins a few metres from the hotel entrance; and the Nationaltheatret metro hub is within 15 minutes on foot. All major Oslo tram and metro lines converge at Jernbanetorget.
The 122 rooms and suites carry design references drawn from the shipping line's archive — navigational charts, maritime colour palettes, and photography from the transatlantic era. Suites on the upper floors offer views across Jernbanetorget toward the Oslofjord. The hotel's culinary and social programme spans four distinct venues: a rooftop bar and restaurant at the summit of the building, the Haven dining room at ground level, a private event space, and Pier 42 — a basement speakeasy-style cocktail bar that has become one of Oslo's most distinctive drinking destinations.
A fitness centre is available to all guests. Service is designed for luxury-tier expectations: a concierge team with deep knowledge of Oslo's art and restaurant scene, and tailored itinerary planning for guests exploring the city. The hotel suits travellers who prioritise design, atmosphere, and dining experience over standard chain facilities.
