Yanggakdo International Hotel

The Yanggakdo International Hotel stands on Yanggak Island, a narrow landmass in the Taedong River roughly 2 km south of Kim Il-sung Square. The island setting means that guests are effectively separated from the surrounding city — access on and off the island is controlled, which is one of the property's most frequently noted characteristics in traveler accounts. The location does, however, provide clear river and city views from upper floors and a distinctive sense of physical detachment from urban Pyongyang.

At 47 stories and approximately 1,000 rooms, the Yanggakdo is the largest hotel in North Korea and the most commonly assigned property for foreign tour groups visiting Pyongyang. Construction was completed in 1992 in a style typical of late-Cold War prestige architecture, featuring a rotating top floor restaurant, a wide podium base housing entertainment facilities, and a dramatic riverfront silhouette visible from multiple points across the city.

Rooms range from standard doubles to suites across multiple floor categories; upper floors command the best river and city panoramas. Interiors are periodic-renovation standard — functional and generally adequate, with televisions offering a modest satellite channel selection. The podium-level facilities are unusually extensive for Pyongyang: a casino open only to foreign guests, a bowling alley, billiards, table tennis, a karaoke bar, and an indoor swimming pool.

Multiple restaurants serve Korean, Chinese, and Western menus. The main buffet-format dining room is one of the better-resourced in Pyongyang for variety, reflecting the volume of international visitors the property handles. A basement level houses additional shops, a hairdresser, and a post office counter. Service at the front desk is experienced with the logistics of large group turnovers.
