The Migok Cooperative Farm Homestay offers a form of accommodation unique to North Korea's tour circuit: overnight stays with working agricultural families in a collective farm settlement on the southern outskirts of Pyongyang, approximately 20–30 km from the city centre. The cooperative sits in a landscape of rice paddies, vegetable plots, and orchard rows that contrasts sharply with Pyongyang's monumental boulevards. Guests are accommodated in private rooms within family homes — basic structures with ondol floor heating, single or twin mat sleeping, and a shared or private bathroom at the most elementary level. Electricity supply follows the settlement's local grid allocation rather than the continuous provision of city hotels; power fluctuations are routine. Cold water is the standard; hot water is heated separately and supplied on request through the guide. The experience is explicitly not about comfort infrastructure but about proximity to a form of domestic North Korean life inaccessible through any standard hotel itinerary. Meals are shared with host families or prepared communally using farm-grown produce: fresh vegetables, rice, egg dishes, and kimchi made on-site. Food quality is often commented on positively by travellers who have tried the programme — home preparation differs tangibly from hotel catering. Local grain liquor or a grain wine may be offered in the evening as a family hospitality gesture. No in-property amenities beyond basic accommodation and food are provided. The farm environment — orchards, fields, unpaved paths — offers natural outdoor space for early-morning or evening walks. All interaction with host families is facilitated through Korean guides who translate. The homestay is available exclusively through specialist operators with established KITC permission for this programme.
