Independence House

Independence House stands on Broad Street in Lagos Island, built in the years leading up to Nigeria's independence from Britain on 1 October 1960 and named to commemorate that transition. At the time of its completion the building was among the tallest structures in Lagos, part of a wave of modernist office towers erected to house the expanding federal civil service as Nigeria moved from colonial administration toward self-government. Architecturally it follows the international modernist style common to late-1950s West African government buildings: a rectilinear concrete frame, a repetitive grid of windows for cross-ventilation in the tropical climate, and minimal ornamentation compared to the colonial-era buildings surrounding it on Broad Street. The building has functioned continuously as office space for government ministries and agencies since its completion, and its interior is not open to casual visitors, so its historical significance is read from the exterior and its documented role in the built history of the newly independent capital. No major restoration campaign has been publicly documented; the building has undergone routine maintenance as a working office tower rather than preservation as a heritage monument. Its presence on Broad Street, alongside other mid-century structures from the same period, marks a distinct architectural break from both the older colonial masonry buildings nearby and the glass-and-steel towers built in Lagos since the 1990s, making it a physical marker of the specific moment of Nigerian independence in the city's downtown skyline.
