Kano is northern Nigeria's largest city and a former Hausa city-state, known for its medieval walled old city, Emir's Palace, Kurmi Market and centuries-old indigo dye pits.
Kano has been a trading centre since at least the 11th century, linked by caravan routes to North Africa. The old city, enclosed by remnants of 14 km of mud-brick walls, holds the Emir's Palace, Central Mosque, Gidan Makama Museum, Kurmi Market and the Kofar Mata dye pits. Modern Kano spreads outward through Sabon Gari and Nassarawa, with Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport as its gateway. The city is conservative and predominantly Muslim, is best visited in the cooler dry months, and requires careful security planning.
The 16 destinations our editors recommend — from iconic landmarks to under-the-radar finds.
Gidan Makama Museum
Historic house of the Makama (a senior Kano title-holder), now Kano's state museum covering Hausa history, the Fulani jihad, crafts and traditional weapons. Set beside the Emir's Palace; combine with the palace exterior and Central Mosque on foot.
Emir's Palace (Gidan Rumfa)
Seat of the Emir of Kano, a walled royal compound begun in the 15th century under Sarki Muhammad Rumfa. Visitors can see the ornate Hausa-style gate and exterior; interior access needs prior arrangement with the Emirate Council.
Kurmi Market
One of West Africa's oldest continuously operating markets, founded around the 15th century. Stalls sell leather goods, calabashes, brass, indigo cloth, beads, spices and traditional medicines. A local guide (about NGN 2,000-3,000, approx $1.50-2.20 for a couple of hours) helps with navigation and bargaining.
Kofar Mata Dye Pits
Stone-and-clay indigo dye pits reputed to date to the late 15th century (some sources cite 1498, others 1458), where cloth is dipped by hand and sun-dried nearby. Among the oldest working dye pits in Africa; tip the dyers who show the process and ask before photographing.
Dala Hill
Rocky hill in the old city, traditionally linked to the founding of Kano. A short climb gives views across rooftops and walls; sunset is the usual time to go, ideally with a local guide.
Kano Central Mosque
Kano's Central (Grand) Mosque sits beside the Emir's Palace and is a major Friday prayer venue. Dress modestly and avoid prayer hours.
