Mountain eco-lodge and coffee plantation in cloud forest near Matagalpa. Rustic cabins with fireplaces, hiking trails, horseback riding, and organic restaurant. German-Nicaraguan hospitality in beautiful natural setting. Wildlife sightings common.
Selva Negra Ecolodge sits in a cloud forest at approximately 1,400 metres above sea level, 12 kilometres north of Matagalpa on the road toward Jinotega in Nicaragua's northern highlands. The surrounding landscape is a working coffee and vegetable plantation. German immigrants settled the land in the 1890s and the same family has farmed it continuously since, giving the lodge a distinct German-Nicaraguan character expressed in the architecture, the kitchen, and the daily rhythm of the property.
Accommodation is in traditional wooden cabins scattered across the forested hillside, each fitted with a fireplace — necessary on cool mountain evenings when temperatures regularly drop below 15°C — as well as a private bathroom and simple locally made furniture. The cabins range from small rooms suited to solo travelers to larger units for families or couples wanting more space. The main lodge building houses the restaurant and bar, styled along Bavarian farmhouse lines with tiled floors and long communal tables.
The restaurant is the lodge's most distinctive feature. Dishes blend German recipes with Nicaraguan ingredients: locally cured sausages, home-baked bread, trout from the property's lake, vegetable soups from the plantation garden, and fresh coffee grown a short walk away from where it is served. The lodge operates an almost entirely on-site food supply chain, which underpins its eco-certification.
Over 30 kilometres of marked trails weave through the cloud forest, past the small artificial lake used for trout fishing, through coffee groves, and up to viewpoints above the canopy. Guided coffee tours explain the full cultivation and processing cycle. Horseback riding is available on the outer estate. Bird life is exceptional — the property records more than 200 species including highland specialties rarely seen at lower elevations. The lodge is a certified eco-operation with composting, recycling, and a biodigester processing organic waste on-site.

Tips for visiting
- Book the guided coffee tour (approximately 1.5 hours) at reception upon arrival — tours fill quickly during visits from Matagalpa tour groups.
- Pack warm layers even in the dry season: cloud forest evenings regularly drop below 15°C and the fireplaces require time to warm a cabin.
- The best bird-watching window is 5:30am to 8am; ask reception the evening before to arrange a guided early-morning walk.
- Taxis from Matagalpa city centre take about 20 minutes and cost approximately $5–8; agree on a fare before departing.
- The restaurant serves meals at set times — check the lunch and dinner schedule at check-in to avoid missing a sitting.
When to visit
December to April (dry season) offers clear skies and optimal conditions for views and bird-watching. The green season (May to November) keeps the cloud forest lush and is excellent for photography, though trails can be muddy and visibility reduced.
Accessibility
The lodge's terrain is mountainous with steep paths between cabins and along most trails. It is not suitable for guests with mobility limitations. The main restaurant and lodge building are on relatively level ground.
