REM Eiland

REM Eiland is one of Amsterdam's most singular dining experiences, occupying the upper decks of a former offshore pirate radio broadcasting platform that was towed to Amsterdam's western harbor after being decommissioned. Built in 1964 and originally positioned off the Dutch coast to broadcast Reclame Eiland (Advertising Island), circumventing broadcasting regulations that existed at the time, the platform was eventually seized by the Dutch government and sat in various Dutch ports before being converted into a restaurant destination in the 2000s. The structure now sits in Amsterdam's IJ harbor area near the NDSM Wharf, an arts and cultural complex in the city's post-industrial North, accessible by a free ferry from behind Centraal Station. The restaurant occupies two levels of the former platform with 360-degree views over the harbor, the IJ waterway, and the Amsterdam skyline. The menu is modern European: fresh North Sea fish preparations, seasonal meat and game dishes, and a selection of small plates that allow for flexible ordering. The kitchen's cooking is competent and well-matched to the setting, but REM Eiland is primarily a destination for the view — particularly at sunset, when the light over the Amsterdam skyline and harbor creates one of the city's most spectacular visual experiences from a dining table. The upper deck is best reserved for evening visits in good weather; the enclosed lower level accommodates year-round dining.
