Shopping Districts
Where to find different types of shops.
Pokhara Lakeside Road (Baidam)
The main commercial strip running parallel to Phewa Lake, approximately 2km long. Houses the largest concentration of shops, restaurants, and services in Pokhara. Everything from budget guesthouses to thangka galleries to trekking gear shops lines this road. Bargaining is expected in most small shops but not in larger, fixed-price stores.
Pokhara Old Bazaar (Bazar)
The traditional market area of pre-tourist Pokhara, centered around Mahendra Pul. More authentic and less touristy than Lakeside. Good for local produce, hardware, traditional Nepali clothing, and household goods. The best place to shop alongside local residents.
Tashiling Tibetan Refugee Camp
A Tibetan refugee settlement established after the 1959 Chinese annexation of Tibet, located 3km from Lakeside. The camp has a carpet weaving factory where visitors can watch traditional Tibetan hand-knotting techniques and buy directly from the producers. Quality and authenticity are guaranteed here.
Malls & Modern Stores
Air-conditioned shopping options.
Modern shopping malls are available in major cities, offering international brands, food courts, and entertainment. They provide a comfortable, air-conditioned shopping experience with fixed prices.
Bargaining Tips
How to negotiate prices in local markets.
Start at about 50% of the asking price and work up. The final price is often 60-70% of initial ask.
Be friendly and patient. Bargaining is a social interaction, not confrontation.
Walk away if you can't agree - the seller may call you back with a better price.
Compare prices at multiple stalls before buying. Get a sense of the market rate.
Buy multiple items from one seller to negotiate a better overall price.
Have small bills ready - don't show large amounts of cash while negotiating.
When NOT to Bargain
- Fixed-price shops and malls
- Government emporiums
- Restaurants and hotels
- Supermarkets and pharmacies
