Ongava Lodge sits within the 34,000-hectare Ongava Game Reserve on the southern boundary of Etosha National Park, sharing an unfenced border with the national park that allows wildlife to move freely between the two areas. The reserve is managed independently as a private concession and provides a dual-access advantage: guests join morning and afternoon game drives both inside Etosha — where the salt pan, large elephant herds, lion, leopard, and cheetah are the primary draw — and within the private reserve, where vehicle numbers are tightly limited and off-road tracking on foot is permitted.
Accommodation is in twelve luxury tents and four bungalow-style rooms. The tented units diverge sharply from the camping aesthetic; they are large, permanent canvas-and-stone structures with wooden floors, four-poster beds, en-suite bathrooms with claw-foot baths, and private verandas. Stone walling integrated into the tent bases, deep thatch overhangs, and the canvas superstructure work together to keep guest areas naturally cool without constant air-conditioning. The architectural centrepiece is the main lodge area, which overhangs an active floodlit waterhole visited by rhino, elephant, lion, and leopard throughout the day and after dark.
Ongava is one of very few private reserves in southern Africa offering guided tracking of both white and black rhino on foot with a specialist guide. Both species are present on the reserve. The proximity of the encounters — conducted on foot in dense mopane and mixed bush — is qualitatively distinct from vehicle-based sightings in the national park. Additional activities include guided game drives into Etosha in open 4WD vehicles, evening bush walks within the private reserve, waterhole hide sessions from a dedicated underground hide at ground level, and optional guided excursions by light aircraft.
Dining follows a set four-course dinner programme with communal or separate table options under canvas. A wine cellar stocked with South African labels supports the programme.
