Okaukuejo Rest Camp

Okaukuejo Rest Camp sits at the heart of Etosha National Park, approximately 120 kilometres from the Andersson Gate entrance, set within the vast 22,270-square-kilometre saltpan wilderness of the Oshikoto Region. The camp is operated by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and serves as one of the park's primary overnight bases, positioned near the western floodlit waterhole that has made Okaukuejo internationally famous among wildlife photographers and safari travelers.

The waterhole, illuminated throughout the night, draws extraordinary concentrations of wildlife during the dark hours and into early morning. Black rhino are regularly sighted here alongside elephant, lion, giraffe, zebra, and a variety of antelope species. A raised stone observation platform provides unobstructed sightlines over the water, and the site operates around the clock — guests can observe nocturnal activity without leaving the camp boundary or requiring a guide. The experience of watching rhinoceros drink at close range in floodlight while other guests sit in near-silence on the platform is one of the more memorable encounters available within Etosha.

Accommodation ranges from basic campsites with power points to standard bungalows and larger self-catering units suited to families or small groups. Self-catering units include refrigerators, cooking equipment, and utensils. An on-site shop stocks provisions, cold drinks, local crafts, and hiking supplies, reducing the need for extensive preparation before park entry.

The camp restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a menu covering Namibian and international dishes at reasonable prices. A swimming pool offers relief from intense daytime heat. An in-camp service station allows fuel top-ups without exiting the park. Staff can assist with game-drive briefings and provide park maps. Advance reservations through NWR are mandatory during peak season — the June-to-October dry season allocation fills weeks ahead of arrival.
