Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort

Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort occupies a palm-shaded valley at the southern terminus of Fish River Canyon in Namibia's Karas Region, approximately 260 kilometres south of Keetmanshoop and close to the Orange River border with South Africa. The resort is operated by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) and takes its name from the Nama phrase meaning scalding water, a reference to the thermal springs that define the site's character and draw visitors from across southern Namibia and neighboring South Africa.

The thermal pools at Ai-Ais are the primary attraction. Natural mineral water emerges from the ground at approximately 60°C and is cooled to comfortable bathing temperature before feeding both indoor and outdoor pool facilities. The water contains sulphur, fluoride, and chloride compounds, and the pools carry a well-established reputation for post-exertion recovery. The outdoor pool complex operates during daylight hours while the indoor facility functions year-round. Fish River Canyon hiking trail completers frequently cite the Ai-Ais thermal pools as the psychological reward for finishing the five-day, 85-kilometre route through the canyon.

Accommodation ranges from camping areas with basic facilities to bungalows with air conditioning and en-suite bathrooms, and larger self-catering units for groups or families. A restaurant at the resort serves standard NWR menus covering grills, salads, and basic local dishes. A general shop stocks provisions including cold drinks, canned food, camping supplies, and fuel. Access to the resort and its thermal facilities requires payment of the NWR daily park conservation fee.

The Fish River Canyon hiking trail closes from November through March each year when canyon floor temperatures become life-threatening. The majority of visitors time stays to coincide with the hiking season from May through September, making Ai-Ais either the endpoint after completing the trail or a standalone thermal spa destination in a striking desert canyon setting.
