Sossus Oasis Camp Site is operated by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), the state entity responsible for accommodation within Namibia's national parks. The campsite occupies a position at Sesriem inside the Namib-Naukluft National Park gate, granting campers the same early-access privilege as guests at the adjacent Sossusvlei Lodge — the park road to the dunes opens at sunrise for all in-gate overnighters, approximately one hour ahead of the public visitor queue that forms outside the gate each morning.
The campsite is divided into numbered pitches, each with a braai (barbecue) stand. Selected premium pitches include nearby electrical connection points. Shared ablution blocks across the site provide flush toilets and hot-water showers and are maintained by NWR staff. A swimming pool on the grounds provides relief from the extreme midday heat that routinely exceeds 40°C in the Sesriem basin during summer months. A small camp shop stocks basic provisions, firewood, and camping gas, though the selection is limited; travellers should provision comprehensively in Swakopmund or in the village of Solitaire before arrival.
Access to Sossusvlei, Deadvlei, and the Sesriem Canyon is through the gate immediately adjacent to the campsite. The canyon, a 30-metre-deep volcanic gorge cut by the Tsauchab River, is walkable on foot directly from the campsite perimeter and is a worthwhile late-afternoon destination when the canyon walls glow in warm angled light. The surrounding Namib Desert delivers one of the darkest night skies in southern Africa; the absence of artificial light pollution makes the campsite an excellent location for both naked-eye constellation viewing and telescope work.
Bookings are made through the NWR central reservations system and sites fill well in advance during the peak June-to-August season. Self-drive campers should carry ample water reserves, comprehensive sun protection, and provisions for at least two additional days beyond their planned stay as insurance against extended drives, vehicle delays, or the temptation to remain longer in the dune field.

Tips for visiting
- Reserve pitches through the NWR booking system at least two to three months ahead for June, July, and August stays — this is Namibia's peak camping season and Sesriem sites are among the most popular in the country.
- Bring all food and water needed for your entire stay plus reserves; the camp shop carries limited stock and there is no reliable grocery option between Solitaire and the campsite.
- A roof-tent configuration on a 4WD keeps sleeping gear off the ground and away from nocturnal desert fauna — scorpions and small snakes are present in the area though encounters are infrequent.
- Position the tent or vehicle away from the ablution block if possible; the block area has lighting that remains on overnight and reduces the quality of stargazing from the immediate vicinity.
When to visit
May to October for dry conditions and cooler overnight temperatures; avoid peak summer (December to February) when daytime temperatures regularly exceed 45°C in the Sesriem basin.
Accessibility
Campsite pitches are on flat gravel terrain. Ablution blocks have steps at some locations. The site is not specifically adapted for wheelchair users. Contact NWR to discuss accessible pitch allocation.
