Amara Ocean Resort

Amara Ocean Resort sits directly on the white sand shore of Ngapali Beach in Rakhine State, on Myanmar's Bay of Bengal coast. Ngapali is widely regarded as Myanmar's finest beach destination: a four-kilometre arc of powdery sand backed by coconut palms, with clear turquoise water that is calm and swimmable for most of the October-to-April dry season. The nearest town, Thandwe, is approximately eight kilometres to the southeast; Thandwe Airport — served by domestic flights from Yangon and Mandalay — is about seven kilometres away.

The resort's accommodation is arranged as standalone wooden bungalows dispersed among coconut and palm gardens that run directly to the beach. The bungalows are constructed in a simple tropical vernacular using local materials: timber frames, thatched roofs, and louvred side panels that allow sea breezes to pass through. The overall aesthetic is relaxed and unpretentious, prioritising the beach-house experience over formal resort infrastructure. Each bungalow includes a private veranda facing the garden.

Rooms are sized comfortably for two and include air conditioning, ceiling fans, en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold water, mosquito nets, and beach bags for day use. Several categories are positioned closer to the beach fringe, reducing the walk across the garden. No two bungalows are identical; slight variations in orientation and planting create a degree of individuality within the property.

The beachfront restaurant is the social and culinary heart of the property, serving grilled seafood caught by Ngapali fishing boats each morning. The menu changes according to daily catch availability — red snapper, tiger prawns, and mud crab are frequent offerings — alongside Myanmar curries and noodle preparations. Tables on the open terrace are set for both lunch and dinner service. A beach bar operates through the afternoon.

The resort does not have a formal spa, but massage services are offered on the beach and in a simple treatment area by trained local therapists. Bicycle hire enables guests to reach Thandwe town and the smaller fishing villages north of the beach. Snorkelling equipment hire and boat trips to nearby islands can be arranged through the front desk. The resort suits travellers looking for uncomplicated beach relaxation following more demanding temple and nature itineraries elsewhere in Myanmar.
