Hammam Bab Doukkala

Hammam Bab Doukkala is one of the Medina's genuine neighborhood public bathhouses, used daily by local residents near the Bab Doukkala Mosque rather than adapted specifically for visitors. Entry is inexpensive, and the format follows the traditional local pattern: bathers bring or rent their own bucket, black soap, and kessa glove, moving through the graduated steam rooms at their own pace, either self-scrubbing or paying a small additional fee for an attendant (tayeba) to perform the gommage scrub. The atmosphere is unpolished and functional rather than designed for comfort, and single-sex hours or separate men's and women's sections are strictly observed, as in nearly all Moroccan public hammams. This is the most authentic and budget-conscious way to experience hammam culture as Moroccans themselves do, though it requires more initiative and comfort with an unfamiliar communal setting than a tourist-oriented hammam. Basic Darija or French phrases and asking staff for guidance on the customary routine are helpful for first-time visitors, and bringing supplies (or renting them cheaply on site) is expected.
