Bab Bou Jeloud is the main western gateway to Fès el-Bali in Morocco's Fès-Meknès region, built in 1913 in a Moorish style that differs from the older surrounding fabric. Its exterior face is covered in blue zellige tilework, the colour traditionally associated with Fès, while the inner face is green, the colour of Islam, so the same gate reads differently depending on the side photographed.

The frame is typically a straight-on shot from the open square in front of the gate, with the triple horseshoe arches and the minarets of the Bou Jeloud mosque behind it. Dusk is the signature moment: as the sky shifts through blue hour, the gate is lit from below and the tiles take on a deep saturated colour, while pedestrian and taxi traffic turns into light trails for long exposures. Summer evenings are especially lively as families fill the square, and cafés line the area with terraces that offer elevated perspectives on the gate. Spring and autumn bring pleasant temperatures for lingering. The square is busy throughout the evening, with tourists, guides, street vendors and local families, so a tripod position needs to be chosen away from the main thoroughfare, and a terrace table at a café is the easiest way to secure a stable elevated view. No fee applies to photograph the gate from the public square, and tripods are not formally restricted, although crowd density can make them impractical after dark. Drones are not permitted in Morocco without authorisation and should not be flown over the medina. Public toilets are available at cafés for customers, and water can be bought at the square. Visitors should watch for unofficial guides who offer to lead them into the medina.
