Hostel Cattaro Kotor

Hostel Cattaro is set in a restored stone building within Kotor's walled Old Town, located in Stari Grad just a short walk from the South Gate (Vrata od Gurdića) — the southernmost of the three original medieval entrances into the fortified city. This quarter of the Old Town sits slightly apart from the most heavily touristed circuits around the Piazza of Arms and the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, but remains within two or three minutes' walk of those main landmarks, the best restaurant lanes, and the bars that animate the old town's evenings. The bus station outside the North Gate (Vrata od Rijeke) is roughly a 10-minute walk through the old town and is the primary arrival point for intercity services from Podgorica, Herceg Novi, and Budva.

The building retains its original stone construction, with thick walls that maintain interior temperatures at manageable levels even during peak summer heat — a meaningful comfort advantage in a city where older accommodation can become stifling in July and August. Accommodation is offered in dormitory rooms typically configured for 4–8 beds, with individual bed lockers and reading lights, and in smaller private rooms with en-suite or shared bathrooms. All spaces are air-conditioned, which distinguishes the hostel from a number of cheaper Old Town alternatives.

A communal lounge on the lower floor serves as a social gathering point, with a book exchange, local maps, and seating arranged to encourage conversation between guests. The rooftop terrace is the hostel's main social draw: an open-air space with views across the Kotor roofscape and the fortification walls rising steeply behind the town, particularly atmospheric at dusk when the walls catch the last light. Staff are notably engaged with guests — offering specific walking route recommendations, precise sunrise and sunset timing for the wall climb, and directions to local seafood restaurants away from the most aggressively touristed lanes.

The hostel draws a mix of solo travellers, cycling tourers passing through on Adriatic routes, and backpackers working their way between Croatia and Albania. Its reputation is built primarily on staff quality and location rather than on facility scale.
