Kosrae Nautilus Resort

Kosrae Nautilus Resort is a small eco-luxury property on Kosrae, the easternmost and least-visited of the Federated States of Micronesia's four main island groups. Kosrae's relative isolation has preserved its marine environment: the coral reefs surrounding the island are rated among the healthiest remaining in the Pacific, intact mangrove forests ring most of the shoreline, and the island's infrastructure is minimal beyond what is needed to support local communities and the small number of visiting researchers and divers. The resort sits at Walung on Kosrae's southwestern coast, approximately fifteen kilometers from Okat Airport (TTK) on the northern shore.

The property was conceived as a sustainable alternative to extractive tourism, and its physical form reflects that philosophy directly. Accommodation consists of beachfront cottages with traditional thatched roofs arranged along a private beach, built using locally harvested materials and designed to maximize natural airflow while minimizing energy consumption. Solar-assisted hot water, quality mattresses, private bathrooms with modern fittings, and ceiling fans are standard; cottages do not have air conditioning, relying instead on consistent sea breezes and the thermal properties of the thatched roofing. Cottage types include standard beachfront units and slightly larger premium cottages with expanded verandahs and direct beach access. All face the ocean and sit within meters of the house reef, where healthy hard and soft corals begin immediately offshore and support abundant sea turtles, Napoleon wrasse, and diverse reef fish populations.

The organic restaurant is a defining feature of the property. Ingredients are grown in an on-site garden, supplemented by fresh catch from local Kosraean fishermen, and the menu changes daily according to what is available. Meals are served in the open-air dining pavilion in a communal format that creates conversation among the small guest count. The restaurant cannot accommodate highly specific dietary requirements given Kosrae's constrained supply chain; guests with medical dietary needs should communicate these well in advance.

The dive shop offers guided dives to Kosrae's signature sites — steep coral walls, fish-dense coral gardens, and two small WWII wreck sites. Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and snorkeling equipment are available for independent use. Guided mangrove kayaking through Kosrae's protected waterways, where sea turtles are frequently encountered, is among the most consistently recommended activities. The property participates in local reef monitoring programs and applies strict low-impact practices throughout its operations.
