Kosrae Backpackers Lodge

Kosrae Backpackers Lodge occupies a modest property in Tofol Village, Kosrae's administrative center and the largest settlement on the island. Tofol sits on the eastern coast of Kosrae, within easy reach of the island's main attractions including Lelu Ruins — the ancient basalt stone city dating to the 13th century — and several pristine mangrove kayaking channels protected under a UNESCO biosphere designation. The lodge is approximately 10 minutes by road from the island's single airfield at Okat.

The guesthouse is run by a local family who have operated it for many years, giving it a distinctly personal character uncommon in the region's accommodation market. The building is a traditional single-level tropical structure with an open communal area, a hammock garden, and practical facilities designed for long-stay budget travelers. Accommodation options include shared dormitory beds and private rooms, all simply furnished with basic but adequate fixtures. Shared bathrooms are kept clean and functional.

The communal kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering, which is particularly useful given Kosrae's limited restaurant options outside the main resort area. The family owners are an invaluable source of local knowledge: they point guests toward less-visited snorkeling spots, arrange informal fishing trips with local contacts, and advise on the best timing for mangrove excursions when tide conditions favor visibility. WiFi is available in common areas. There is no swimming pool, restaurant, or air conditioning in most rooms; ceiling fans and natural cross-ventilation keep temperatures manageable through the year. The lodge suits independent travelers who prioritize authentic local engagement and access to Kosrae's spectacular natural environment over resort comforts.
