Ría Lagartos Flamingo and Las Coloradas Trail

The Ría Lagartos Flamingo and Las Coloradas Trail is reached by rental car from Valladolid or Tizimín, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours along paved roads into the town of Río Lagartos, gateway to the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve on Yucatán's northern coast. The walkable boardwalk portion of about 2 km is flat, on raised wooden planks over coastal wetland, with no elevation gain or technical difficulty; the flamingo nesting grounds and the pink lagoons at nearby Las Coloradas are reached only by a separate boat crossing run by the local cooperative. The boardwalk surface is stable but exposed to direct coastal sun with almost no shade, while the boat portion crosses open water with similarly high sun exposure. From the boardwalk's start near the town dock, the path passes salt flats and mangrove edges with interpretive panels before reaching a viewing platform. The boat leg then navigates the estuary's flamingo nesting colonies, most active between March and June, before optionally continuing to the vivid pink evaporation ponds of Las Coloradas a short drive or boat ride further east. There is no potable water along the boardwalk or during the boat trip, so hikers should carry their own; restrooms are available at the cooperative office near the town dock. Because the full outing combines walking, a boat crossing, and often a stop at Las Coloradas, it is best planned as a half-day trip rather than a short excursion.
