Ek Balam Ruins Trail

The Ek Balam Ruins Trail begins at the site entrance near the village of Temozón, about 30 minutes by taxi or colectivo from Valladolid along a paved road, with parking available at the visitor entrance. Standard INAH admission covers the walking loop; no additional permit is needed. The route covers a short 1.5 km loop with about 30 metres of elevation gain concentrated entirely in the climb up the Acropolis, the site's principal stepped pyramid, which remains open for visitors to ascend. The path surface is a mix of packed dirt and stone through jungle-fringed grounds, flat until the final pyramid ascent, which involves a steep but stable stone stairway rather than technical climbing. Shade is moderate along the entrance path beneath surrounding forest, though the open plaza and pyramid stairs are fully exposed to the sun. From the entrance arch, the loop passes the ball court before reaching the Acropolis, where a stairway leads up past a large stucco doorway carved as an open-mouthed jaguar or serpent figure, one of the best-preserved stucco facades in the Maya world, roughly two-thirds of the way to the summit. The summit itself offers wide views over the surrounding jungle canopy and makes a natural high point before descending the same stairway. There are no water sources along the trail; hikers should bring their own, and the visitor entrance has restrooms and a small shaded rest area, so carrying water beforehand is advisable.
