Hacienda Yaxcopoil

Hacienda Yaxcopoil preserves a working henequen (sisal fiber) plantation largely as it stood during Yucatán's early 20th-century boom, when the region's rope-fiber exports made it one of the wealthiest agricultural economies in the Americas. The main house retains its original furnishings, patterned tile floors, and formal reception rooms, giving a sense of the plantation-owning family's daily life, while a separate chapel served the estate's religious needs. The most evocative part of the visit is the machine room, where the original steam-powered decorticating equipment used to strip and process henequen leaves into raw fiber still stands largely intact, alongside displays explaining the labor-intensive process. Workers' quarters and outbuildings round out the picture of the hacienda system that structured rural Yucatán society for decades before synthetic fibers collapsed the henequen market in the mid-20th century. A visit takes about an hour to 90 minutes to see the main house, chapel, and machine room. Because Yaxcopoil sits directly on the road between Mérida and Uxmal, it works well as a morning stop en route to the ruins, before the heat of midday and before continuing south to the Puuc archaeological sites.
