Palacio de Gobierno, Mérida

The Palacio de Gobierno faces Plaza Grande as the seat of Yucatán's state government, and its main attraction for visitors is a series of large-scale murals by local painter Fernando Castro Pacheco, completed over more than two decades starting in the 1970s, wrapping the building's central courtyard and staircase walls. The murals depict Yucatán's history in dramatic, expressive scenes, moving from Maya creation mythology and pre-Hispanic life through the violence of Spanish conquest, the exploitation of indigenous labor under colonial and henequen-era rule, and the region's revolutionary and post-revolutionary struggles. Visitors can walk the ground-floor courtyard freely to view the lower murals, then climb to the second-floor gallery and balcony, which frame the largest historical scenes and offer a wide view back over Plaza Grande and the cathedral opposite. Because the building remains an active seat of government, some areas beyond the public galleries are restricted, but the mural spaces are open daily and free to enter. A visit takes 30 to 45 minutes to see the courtyard and second-floor murals at an unhurried pace, best done in daylight hours when natural light through the courtyard windows illuminates the paintings clearly.
