Mercado Municipal de Coatepec

The Mercado Municipal de Coatepec sits at the center of Coatepec, the Pueblo Mágico known as Mexico's coffee capital, in the highlands of central Veracruz. Its defining feature is a run of stalls selling locally grown and roasted coffee by the kilo, ranging from everyday blends to single-farm lots, alongside standard market fare: fresh produce, meat, prepared regional dishes, and household goods. This is a working local market rather than a craft bazaar, so the goods are overwhelmingly authentic and functional, with only a handful of stalls carrying handicrafts or souvenirs aimed at day-trippers from nearby Xalapa. Coffee prices are usually fixed and posted per kilo, though buying several kilos from the same roaster can open room for a small discount; food-stall prices are fixed. Cash is essential, as card readers are uncommon among the individual stalls, and there is no tax-refund scheme. The market is compact and easy to walk in under an hour, with a noticeably stronger, more festive atmosphere on Saturdays when a larger tianguis (street market) spills into the surrounding streets and food stalls do brisk trade in tamales and atole. The coffee-roaster stalls near the market's main aisle are the must-visit corner, where vendors will often let visitors sample a cup before buying.
