Mercado Jáuregui is the historic covered market of central Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz state, and serves primarily as a working food and household-goods market rather than a tourist attraction. Stalls sell fresh produce, meat, and seafood, dried chiles and spices, and household basics, with a strong core of prepared-food counters serving Xalapa specialties such as chilaquiles, tamales de frijol, and local coffee, reflecting the region's coffee-growing highlands. Vendors are almost entirely local traders rather than curated craft sellers, so the ratio of authentic goods to tourist trinkets skews heavily toward the former; visitors will find few souvenirs here beyond the odd handicraft stall. Prices are largely fixed for food items, with light negotiation possible on non-perishable goods; cash is standard and card acceptance is rare among individual stalls, and there is no tax-refund process at this kind of market. The atmosphere is dense, functional, and loud during the mid-morning rush, with narrow aisles between covered stalls and comedores tucked along the perimeter offering some of the best-value regional breakfasts in the city. The busiest and most rewarding corners are the prepared-food aisle near the main entrance and the produce section toward the back, where highland coffee and local fruit are sold by weight.
