Gran Café del Portal

Gran Café del Portal sits under the arcades of the Veracruz Zócalo, next to the Gran Hotel Diligencias, and has operated as the port's other historic coffeehouse for over a century, in a long-running rivalry with Gran Café de la Parroquia over whose café lechero ritual came first. The kitchen focuses on Veracruzano breakfast and coffeehouse staples rather than a chef-driven menu: café lechero poured tableside from tall kettles is the draw, paired with huevos a la veracruzana, torrejas, and pan dulce. The dining room is an open-air arcade facing directly onto the plaza, with marble tables, ceiling fans, and a view of the cathedral and municipal palace across the square — there is no dress code, and noise levels climb in the evening when marimba and danzón groups perform in the Zócalo. There is no separate cocktail or wine programme; coffee, aguas frescas, and beer cover the drinks list. Reservations are not taken; the arcade's many tables and fast turnover mean a wait is rare outside of major holidays, when the plaza fills for Carnaval or Independence Day events.
