Pico de Orizaba Base Camp to Piedra Grande Approach

The Piedra Grande approach begins in Tlachichuca, Puebla, roughly two hours by 4x4 truck from the town center along a rough dirt track that climbs through pine forest and open volcanic scree to the Piedra Grande refuge at 4,260 metres, on the northern flank of Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltepetl) inside Parque Nacional Pico de Orizaba. No permit is required to stay at or walk from the hut, though most visitors arrange the 4x4 transfer and hut bunk through a guide house in Tlachichuca. From the refuge, the walk toward the Jamapa Glacier tongue covers about 5 kilometres round trip and gains 200 to 300 metres over loose volcanic scree and consolidated ash, with no technical climbing required to reach the glacier's edge. The route is fully exposed to sun, wind, and sudden weather changes above 4,000 metres, with no shade along the way. Landmarks include the hut itself, a series of ash gullies used for acclimatization laps, and the lower moraine where the glacier begins; hikers not attempting the summit should turn around at the moraine edge rather than stepping onto the ice, which requires crampons, an ice axe, and rope-team experience. There is no water source along the route, so all water must be carried from the hut, which itself relies on stored or trucked-in supplies. Piedra Grande refuge offers basic dormitory shelter with bunks but no heating, food service, or reliable cell signal. Hikers attempting only the approach walk, without continuing to the summit, should still budget a day for acclimatization given the hut's extreme altitude, and should not proceed past the moraine without mountaineering equipment and glacier travel experience.
