Coatepec-Xico Coffee Country Loop

The Coatepec-Xico Coffee Country Loop begins near Parque Hidalgo in central Coatepec, in the Veracruz highlands, and is easily reached on foot from either town center or by the local buses that run between Coatepec and Xico every 20 to 30 minutes. No permit is required for this rural walk. The loop covers about 10 kilometres over gently rolling terrain, with roughly 150 metres of cumulative elevation gain, and takes 3 to 4 hours at a relaxed pace. The path alternates between paved rural roads, dirt farm tracks, and short stretches through shade-grown coffee plantations, with light tree cover for much of the route and open sections near the fincas that receive full highland sun. There is no technical difficulty; the walking surface is stable dirt and pavement throughout, though tracks can turn muddy after rain in the wetter months. Landmarks along the route include several family-run coffee fincas open for tastings and short tours, an orchid nursery, and patches of cloud-forest edge vegetation where the route nears Xico. A reasonable turn-around point for a shorter outing is the midpoint finca cluster, roughly 5 kilometres from Coatepec, which also serves as a rest stop with food and drink available for purchase. Water is not available along most of the route outside the finca stops, so hikers should carry a bottle and plan to refill or buy drinks at one of the coffee farms. There are no refuge huts, as the walk passes through inhabited countryside rather than wilderness, and either town provides lodging and services at each end of the loop.
