Playa Villa Rica

Playa Villa Rica sits about 65 kilometers north of Veracruz port in Actopan municipality, marking the site where Hernan Cortes and his expedition first landed on the Gulf coast in 1519 and founded the settlement of Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. The beach itself is small and undeveloped, with tan sand and calm, generally clear water for the northern Veracruz coast, sheltered somewhat by the rocky outcrops and low headland nearby. The shoreline is short and gently curving rather than a long open run, giving it a quieter, more contained feel than the metro-area beaches to the south. Its character is defined more by history than by beach infrastructure: a historical marker commemorates the Cortes landing, and the setting remains largely rural, drawing history-minded day-trippers and locals looking for a quiet, uncrowded stretch of coast rather than a resort crowd. Amenities are minimal -- a few simple seafood palapas serve the handful of visitors, there is no sunbed rental, and no lifeguard is present, so swimmers should exercise their own judgment about conditions. Parking is informal near the access road. Reaching Villa Rica requires a rental car via Highway 180 north, since there is no direct bus service to the beach itself, making it a destination mainly for visitors with their own transport or those combining it with other stops along the northern coast.
