Chachalacas Beach

Chachalacas Beach lies about 55 kilometers north of Veracruz port near the town of Ursulo Galvan, and it is defined as much by the vast dune field behind it as by the shoreline itself. The sand is coarse and tan, running into an expansive belt of wind-sculpted dunes that stretch inland, and the Gulf water is open and often choppy, with a moderate onshore wind that makes it better suited to walking and dune sports than calm swimming. The beach is long, straight, and fully exposed, without coves or windbreaks, giving it a wide, windswept feel rather than a sheltered resort setting. The atmosphere is casual and village-like: a scattering of palapa seafood restaurants lines the main access point, and the dunes themselves are the main draw, with ATV and dune buggy operators and sandboarding rental stands doing steady business, especially on weekends. Facilities away from this central strip are minimal, with no continuous boardwalk or beach clubs, and parking is informal rather than in a paved lot. There is no significant lifeguard presence, so swimmers should stay close to shore and be mindful of the wind-driven chop. Reaching Chachalacas is easiest by rental car along Highway 180, though visitors without a car can take a bus to Cardel and continue by taxi. The combination of open beach and dune adventure sports makes it a distinct day-trip destination from Veracruz port rather than a lounge-and-swim beach.
