Rafting and Canyoning at Jalcomulco (Rio Antigua and Rio Actopan)

Jalcomulco, a small town in the central Veracruz highlands about 40 minutes from Xalapa, has built its economy around river adventure and is widely promoted as the rafting capital of Mexico. The Rio Antigua (also called the Rio Pescados along this stretch) offers a roughly 21-kilometre run of Class II and III rapids that is navigable year-round, making it the most reliable rafting option in the region, while the nearby Rio Actopan, which begins at a spot known as El Descabezadero and runs about 15 kilometres of Class II-III water into the town of Actopan, sees its strongest and most exciting flow between August and January. Multiple established outfitters, including Proadventure, Armonia Rafting, Desafiando Expediciones, and Huitzilapan Expediciones, run guided descents with full safety equipment, and several combine rafting with rappelling down canyon walls, via ferrata-style rock scrambling, and canopy zip-line circuits over the river gorge. No prior experience is needed for the standard rafting trips, which welcome participants roughly 8 years and older; the rappelling and canyoning add-ons generally require a bit more fitness and comfort with heights. Guides are trained in river rescue and carry throw-bags and first-aid kits, with safety kayakers often shadowing rafts through the more technical rapids. Life jackets, helmets, and all rafting or rappelling hardware are provided; participants bring swimwear, secured sandals, and a change of dry clothes. Because Jalcomulco's rivers are spring- and rain-fed rather than glacier-fed, conditions shift with the seasons: the Antigua stays runnable through the dry months, while the Actopan needs the rainy season's added flow to reach its liveliest rapids.
